A live test case in a sports context during a glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournament. The goal: validate how audience participation via smartphones works at an event with multiple simultaneous matches.

Context of the event

This pilot ran during a glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournament organised by Howest Sports & Movement students. The layout used 2 standing zones, each with a capacity of roughly 100 people.

The setup

In this test case, network quality proved to be an important factor for a consistent experience across all devices.

Challenges and insights

1) Audience concentration at the peak moment

The final ran at the same time as other matches, so fewer people participated at the same moment.

2) Increasing participation rate

Around 20 of the 60 attendees actively took part. Extra event calls-to-action can improve this.

3) Network remains a key parameter

This pilot confirms that internet quality directly impacts the live smartphone experience.

Conclusion and next steps

The test case shows that Lumicrowd also works in a sports environment and can be deployed quickly. The next step is building scale: more simultaneous participants, stronger activation during peak moments and further optimisation for network conditions.
